An adult with measles may have put the public at risk of exposure after visiting 18 businesses across metro-Denver from Dec. 21 through Dec. 29.
The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE) in partnership with the Tri-County Health Department released a warning Monday for anyone who may have visited those locations in that time to look out for measles symptoms.
Measles is a highly contagious viral infection that is passed through coughing and sneezing. The individual diagnosed was an unvaccinated, international traveler.
“It is important to make sure you are protected against measles, especially when traveling outside the U.S. Vaccination is the only effective preventive measure against measles,” Dr. Larry Wolk, executive director and chief medical officer of CDPHE, said in a statement. “Children as young as 6 months old can receive a vaccination for protection, and adults should make sure they are protected too.”
Prior to his or her diagnosis, the patient made rounds to 18 businesses across Aurora, Boulder, Broomfield, Centennial, Denver, Englewood, Louisville and Parker.
Health department officials are in the process of contacting individuals who may have been exposed to measles during the patient’s time at AFC Urgent Care and Parker Adventist Hospital. All others who may have visited the locations listed below are advised to watch for symptoms of measles, which can take up to 21 days to manifest.
Measles is a serious disease, characterized by fever, runny nose, red eyes, light sensitivity, coughing and, eventually, a rash that appears on the face and spreads to the rest of the body. Complications can include pneumonia or swelling in the brain.
Measles is contagious four days prior to the rash and four days after, so symptomatic individuals are advised to stay at home and reach out to medical assistance from there.
