A police officer was shot in the leg and a suspect was gravely injured when officers responded to a reported robbery at a Denver convenience store.

The suspect later died, the Denver Post reported.

Police Chief Robert White says two officers were on bicycle patrol near the state Capitol building Wednesday night when a person who saw the robbery called them over to the store.

One of the officers exchanged gunfire with the suspect, who White was in "grave condition."

The injured officer was treated at the hospital and released.

Two other people who were not involved in the robbery suffered minor injuries during the confrontation, but White did not elaborate.
