A government asbestos inspector alerted by a neighbor stopped the unpermitted demolition of two trailers in an Elyria-Swansea mobile home park and the owner has been required to call in a contractor to do the work properly.

Laura Shumpert, who supervises the state Department of Public Health and Environment's Compliance Enforcement Unit, said in an email Friday the neighbor's call came last week regarding work at 4765 and 4795 York St. An inspector from the city and county of Denver, under state contract, verified the complaint and stopped the work,  Shumpert said.

Some of the debris was determined to contain asbestos, but not in a condition in which fibers would be released into the air during demolition.

"As a precaution, these materials have been covered and will be removed by trained and certified personnel," Shumpert said. She added the "potential for exposure would have been minimized."
