Denver Human Services started accepting applications Friday from Denverites who meet income requirements and need help paying their heating bills.

Application for the Low-income Energy Assistance Program, or LEAP, can be obtained by calling 1-866-HEAT-HELP (432-8435), or visiting denvergov.org/LEAP.

LEAP is a statewide, federally funded program open to households in which at least one member is a U.S. citizen or legal resident responsible for paying heating costs. To be eligible, applicants can earn no more than  60 percent of Colorado's area median income.

The assistance is available through April. Human Services said 7,100 Denverites got LEAP help between last November and this April.
