Royal Resin is the latest cannabis business to recall marijuana flower and pre-rolled joints and blunts after the Denver Department of Public Health & Environment found high levels of yeast and mold in its products.
Six stores across Denver and Aurora might have sold strains with enough yeast and mold to cause health problems, according to the public health department: Diego Pellicer on West Alameda Avenue, Starbuds on Brighton Boulevard, Treatments Unlimited on East Colfax Avenue, Mile High on South Federal Boulevard, GreenFields on West Mississippi Avenue, and Herbal Center on East 37th Avenue.
The contaminated strains are Colorado Kush, Tropical Zkittles, Lemon Cookies, Lemon Granada, NYCD, GG#4, Hulk Pops, Dr. Strange, Alaskan Ice, Witches Weed, Purple Pipeline and Tangerine Power.
You should dispose of the products or check with the store if you're unsure whether what you bought is tainted, health officials said.
When it comes to negative health effects, Danica Lee, director of public health investigations for the city, said, "We're lacking great research in that area. There is a correlation with consumer complaints about respiration issues and high microbial levels that can produce toxins, but they are pretty rare."
Royal Resin is the eighth company to recall weed for high mold levels since 2017, Lee said. While the health department frames the recalls as "voluntary," they only occurred after an investigation, and officials would have recalled the products with or without the company's blessing.
"I will say that in this situation the business has been proactive and solutions-oriented," Lee said.
