The Greenwood Village-based Red Robin Gourmet Burgers Inc. closed nine of 12 Red Robin Burger Works locations across the country and is rebranding others.

Among the those being rebranded as Red Robin Express are the two Denver locations: one on the 16th Street Mall at California Street and one inside the Northfield Stapleton shopping center, at 8270 Northfield Blvd.

Locations in Boulder and Fort Collins closed on Sept. 30.

Burger Works was the fast-casual version of Red Robin restaurants, and will remain so after the renaming, rebranding and remodeling.

According to a press release, the goal of the overhaul is to better differentiate the fast-casual spots from the sit-down dining restaurants.

Red Robin Gourmet Burgers Inc. CEO Denny Marie Post said in a statement, “We’ve gained considerable knowledge since opening the first of our smaller, fast casual locations in 2011. We are now conducting a strategic review of how this alternative platform can better support our brand as a whole and best serve our guests.”

Red Robin also closed five Burger Works in Chicago and two in Washington, D.C. A location in Clakamas, Ore., will also be rebranded.
