Is it possible the Denver Broncos go after Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo in free agency this summer? ESPN's Adam Schefter says he could envision that scenario playing out.
"If the Broncos determine Trevor Siemian is not the solution, and Paxton Lynch still needs one more year of seasoning, Romo could finish his career in Denver, following the path of Peyton Manning and his former Cowboys' teammate DeMarcus Ware," Schefter wrote Tuesday.
The Broncos were one of four teams Schefter says he could see going after Romo this offseason.
On Tuesday, the 36-year-old Romo essentially handed the Cowboys' starting QB reigns over to Dak Prescott in a heartfelt speech. Prescott, along with rookie tailback Ezekiel Elliott and a talented offensive line, have led Dallas to an 8-1 start while Romo has been sidelined with a fractured vertebra.
Romo conceded the starting job but also made it clear that he wants to continue playing football in the future.
Romo turns 37 in April, and he's set to make a base salary of $14 million with a cap hit of $24.7 million in 2017. He'd be an attractive option for any team in win-now mode that needs a talented quarterback like, say, the Broncos.
Romo's injuries are a concern. He broke his collarbone twice in 2015, which knocked him out of all but four regular season games. And he couldn't make it through the preseason without enduring a serious injury this year. But Romo is so tantalizing because when healthy, he's one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL. He threw for 3,705 yards, 34 TD and nine interceptions in 2014.
