Gary Kubiak's tenure as head coach of the Denver Broncos is over. News broke hours before the Broncos' 24-6 win over the Oakland Raiders on Sunday that Kubiak was stepping down because of concerns about his health.
That news was confirmed when Broncos players said Kubiak told them he planned to resign as head coach after the team won its regular-season finale. When asked if the reports were true, Kubiak didn't deny them and said that he would share more about his decision Monday.
"He told us that he was going through some stuff," Von Miller said after the game. "And as players we see it. His health was in question. Whatever he's going to do from here, I'm with him 100 percent."
Kubiak, 55, missed one game this season with what the team called a "complex migraine condition." He had to be taken to the hospital after Denver's loss to Atlanta in October, and he didn't coach in the team's next game against the Chargers.
When he was head coach of the Texans in 2013, Kubiak suffered a "mini-stroke" and had to be rushed to the hospital. The official diagnosis was that he had a blood clot that blocked an artery for a short period of time and affected the blood flow in the brain.
Kubiak became head coach of the Broncos in January 2015. He helped Denver go 12-4 last season and led them on an improbable Super Bowl run. This year, Denver couldn't overcome its issues offensively and missed the playoffs with a 9-7 record.
"Really surprised. Kind of sad obviously, that he wasn't going to be here," quarterback Trevor Siemian said. "Didn't really have any idea. Glad we won, but it still just feels kind of weird."
