A 34-year-old man is accused of first-degree murder following a fatal stabbing at a homeless shelter last week in Denver.

Timothy Lovelace is accused of murdering Gordon Everts, 45, at the New Genesis shelter on May 11, according to the Denver District Attorney's Office.

Lovelace had been speaking with the victim near the victim's bunk before he left, returned with a chef's knife and stabbed the man to death, according to witness statements recounted in a police affidavit.

Lovelace is being held without bond. Both he and Everts were staying at the shelter but hadn't been there long, according to New Genesis CEO Tammie Carroll.

"This has never happened before," she said, noting that the shelter has operated since 1986. "... It's a tragedy."

The shelter is reviewing its procedures to see if anything could have prevented the attack, she said.

"We’re just making sure that our current residents are OK after what happened," she continued. "We had several residents that witnessed it. It’s traumatizing."

New Genesis has a shelter for single men and transitional housing for single women.

"The overall goal is to regain self-sufficiency through employment," she said.
