Mallory Pugh’s historic goal is a nominee for the NWSL’s goal of the week
Pugh’s strike served as insurance in the Spirit’s 2-0 win over Houston.
In August, Mallory Pugh became the youngest U.S. women’s soccer player to score a goal in the Olympics.
On Saturday, the 19-year-old Colorado native set another record when she nutmegged Houston Dash goalkeeper Lydia Williams to become the youngest player to score a goal in a National Women’s Soccer League game.
Pugh’s strike served as insurance in the Washington Spirit’s 2-0 win over Houston. It also earned Pugh, who was making her second career start as a pro, a nomination for the NWSL Goal of the Week.
Pugh is up against Portland FC’s Lindsey Horan, the North Carolina Courage’s Ashley Hath and the Chicago Red Stars’ Christen Press for the weekly honor. Pugh’s goal was historic, but it might be difficult for her to top Horan’s laser of a header.
Fans who wish to vote for Pugh can do so by tweeting at the NWSL’s official account with the hashtag #PughGOW.
