Flyers for a white nationalist group were not found on East High School's campus, said Will Jones, Denver Public School's director of media relations. Nor has the district found anything to substantiate claims that the group was recruiting students.
Nevertheless, flyers were found near the school and brought to the attention of East High School's principal, per Jones.
On the online neighborhood forum Nextdoor, one person reported and photographed flyers for The Traditional Workers Party on Thursday afternoon. The poster said the flyers, which declare the area a "National Socialist Protected Zone," were found near Colfax Avenue and York St.
Here's what Denver Public Schools had to say about the flyers:
To our knowledge, these flyers have not been shared on the East High School campus. If so, school and district leaders would have taken swift action to stop the distribution of such flyers on schools grounds and ensure that students and educators received appropriate support. The Denver Police and the Denver Public Schools Department of Safety are aware of the flyers. At this time, they have not seen anything to substantiate a threat or an effort to recruit students to join a white nationalist organization.
DPS schools are equitable and safe spaces for all students and families and the district is committed to cultivating safe and supportive learning environments for all, to embracing and valuing diversity, and to acting quickly to prevent and address issues of discrimination and harassment in schools.
