"What is going on with the public library in Cherry Creek (on Milwaukee)? It is still closed."

"Why the hell is this library still closed?"

Those are just a few of the messages we've received asking us to look into why the Ross-Cherry Creek Branch Library is closed.

Rumors have spread among Denverites in the area that Denver Public Library system intends to sell the building. They're worried that the branch will never reopen.

But we have an answer! Though, it may not be the one nearby neighbors want to hear:

DPL said they're hopeful that the branch will reopen in the fall.

Let's backtrack.

The branch temporarily shut down at the end of 2021 due to structural issues. DPL previously said the branch underwent a structural review in January 2022 that determined "more analysis was needed to ensure the structural integrity of the building."

A recent analysis determined that "the building can be reoccupied and the building can be reopened," according to DPL.

But before the building can reopen, DPL said several things need to occur, according to DPL spokesperson Olivia Gallegos.

Building systems need to be checked, cleaning evaluations need to be completed, along with any deferred maintenance need, IT work, shelving rearrangement and collection maintenance, Gallegos said.

Besides these operations needs, DPL also needs to hire some staff. Gallegos said the library system is determining what ideal staffing levels look like and will post the needed positions in the future.

All in all, DPL is working to reopen the branch.

In the interim, residents can use the Eugene Field Branch and the Schlessman Family Branch for their library needs.
