The Lakewood Police Department announced Wednesday afternoon that it has arrested a Commerce City man suspected of killing Denver parafencer Terre Engdahl in a hit-and-run last week.

Jimmy Lee Chavez was arrested at his home Tuesday, according to a statement from the Lakewood police. Chavez is accused of fleeing Friday night after hitting Engdahl, who was walking near the intersection of West 23rd Ave. and Kipling St. at the time. The 29 year old later died from his injuries.

Engdahl's death shocked the tight-knit Denver fencing community. He notably overcame a traumatic brain injury and stroke caused by a 2015 car crash, which left him in a wheelchair. After regaining the ability to walk, he became a fixture at the Denver Fencing Center, where he trained and won several medals.

Police still haven't located the 2014 Chevrolet Camaro involved in the crash. The department is asking anyone with information on the vehicle to contact its office at 303-983-7300 and ask for Detective Jim Moffat.

The car's DWB-P87 license plate may have been removed by now, police said. The black vehicle suffered extensive damage to its front end, including a missing driver's side headlight and damage to its windshield.
