The Colorado Rockies will have a pair of participants in the All-Star Game scheduled for July 12, as third baseman Nolan Arenado and outfielder Carlos Gonzalez were both voted in as reserves Tuesday.
Arenado will back up the Chicago Cubs’ Kris Bryant, while Gonzalez will be behind the Washington Nationals’ Bryce Harper in right field.
Bryant was one of five Cubs to appear in the National League’s starting lineup, which was determined by a fan vote. Chicago shortstop Addison Rusell, second baseman Ben Zobrist, first baseman Anthony Rizzo and center fielder Dexter Fowler will all start alongside Bryant.
Arenado and Gonzalez are both in the midst of fantastic seasons for Colorado. Arenado has provided his usual superhuman defense, while smashing 22 home runs and 66 RBIs. Gonzalez, meanwhile, has hit 18 home runs and 51 RBIs on a .317 batting average. This will be Arenado’s second All-Star appearance and Gonzalez’s third.
Starting pitcher Tyler Chatwood, who's 8-4 with a 3.15 ERA, did not make the cut. He recently returned from a 15-day stint on the DL.
Rookie shortstop Trevor Story is still in the running to be an All-Star. A fan vote determines the last roster spot in both leagues. Story, who's hit 19 home runs and 50 RBIs this season, is one of five NL players eligible for the final spot. Voting ends at 2 p.m. Friday. You can vote here.
