Montbello is getting a new affordable senior housing development with 85 income-restricted apartments for people aged 62 and older. Groundbreaking happened Thursday, but the units won't open until June 2017.

This news comes as housing for seniors is getting harder to find all across the state. Twenty percent of calls to Colorado Housing Connects hotline come from those over the age of 65, reported KUNC.

People interested in signing up for the Montbello units won't be able to do so until spring of 2017. Interested individuals should check www.voacolorado.org in January 2017 for a confirmed date, said Jordan Kellerman with Volunteers of America Colorado. She expects that there will be a waitlist too.

The new Meadows at Montbello will have one- and two-bedroom units for households earning up to 60 percent of the area median income, the city said. Those who live there will also get access to support services and an outdoor community garden.
