Texas Sen. Ted Cruz did what was once unthinkable and yet was always inevitable today. He endorsed Donald Trump, the nominee of his party and the man who once called Cruz' wife ugly.
Meanwhile, the woman who championed Colorado Republicans' opposition to Trump is putting her faith in God.
Kendal Unruh led the unsuccessful Free the Delegates movement at the Republican National Convention. She tweeted earlier this month about leaving the party.
She posted this on Facebook today, before Cruz made it official but as rumors were flying:
Our clear conscience was only one of countless gifts we didn't deserve, but we obtained by the blood sacrifice of a pure lamb. He was sacrificed so we could be free from the bondage of a guilty conscience that consumes us when we, as believers, violate God's principles in justification for our actions. Succinctly, violating a God-given, Christ-centered conscience mitigates the priceless sacrifice Christ made. Not a single political candidate is worth that trade off. Not one.
The comments on the public post quickly turn to Cruz' decision, which he also shared on Facebook:
After many months of careful consideration, of prayer and searching my own conscience, I have decided that on Election Day, I will vote for the Republican nominee, Donald Trump.
I’ve made this decision for two reasons. First, last year, I promised to support the Republican nominee. And I intend to keep my word.
Second, even though I have had areas of significant disagreement with our nominee, by any measure Hillary Clinton is wholly unacceptable.
Later Friday, Unruh posted again.
I know this is going to shock the Trump supporters, but...Cruz is not my conscience. If ten million people I admire endorsed Trump it wouldn't change the reasons why I can't and won't vote for him. Dom asked me after the news, "Do you ever think you might be wrong?" I told him I would have to ignore everything I know about Godly principles and truly violate my religious conscience in a way I would never recover. Dom was actually asking me a test question to see if I, too, would capitulate to pressure! Cruz succumbed to the party threats of denied resources/a nomination and the bribe of a buddy potentially being a justice with a backroom deal. If Trump is destined to win, he will still have to win without my vote.
I'm not sure what happens next. Trump said in July that if Cruz endorsed him, he would not accept it.
