There are now 998,345 active, registered Democrats in Colorado, just about 6,000 voters more than the Republican Party can count here, marking a milestone in Colorado politics.

When you also include inactive voters, the Democrats' lead grows to about 24,000 people.

That's not a huge difference, especially when you consider that independent voters outnumber both parties, but it shows the Democrats are gaining some ground here.

For comparison: In October 2006, registered Republicans outnumbered Democrats by more than 100,000 in Colorado. Prior to now, the GOP had held the edge for 30 years, according to CNN. (I've heard different numbers on this, and I'm waiting on further confirmation.)

A good deal of the change has come in the last few months. Both Republicans and Democrats have been adding voters to their rolls, but the Democrats have been doing it fast enough to erase a 3,000 voter deficit since September, as The Colorado Independent reported.
