Denver's beloved costume store Flossy McGrew's is once again closed, just days after it reopened on South Santa Fe Drive.
Flossy McGrew's & Son opened Oct. 1 at 2645 S. Santa Fe Drive just in time to capture Halloween sales — a major revenue generator for costume shops.
But on Friday, the store posted on Facebook that its doors were temporarily closed "due to fire code."
"It is a hard hit to already dire financial circumstances. But we should be open by Wednesday at the latest," Tamara Pidhayny, Flossy McGrew's director of retail sales, told Denverite.
Flossy McGrew's closed its South Broadway location for nearly three years after its founder Suelynn Gustafson died in 2013. It's unclear why the store is closed once again.
The Denver Fire Department said it did not order Flossy McGrew's to stop selling.
"I’m not sure what might be going on, however, I can assure you a business in the city and county of Denver is not shut down without the knowledge of the division chief of fire prevention being aware of it," said fire spokeswoman Melissa Taylor.
Pidhayny said, "We are complying with the individuals directing us from our given sanction." But she declined to provide the name of who the store was working with or what sanction needed to be resolved.
"The owner would prefer I don't speak about it," Pidhayny said via Facebook. "We're just doing what we're told to open for Halloween. Getting the press involved is not in our interest. Thanks."
