Gary Kubiak officially announced his decision to resign as head coach of the Denver Broncos after two seasons Monday, and it appears general manager John Elway has wasted little time in the search for Kubiak's successor.
The Broncos have requested to interview Atlanta Falcons offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.
Shanahan, 37, is the offensive coordinator with the Atlanta Falcons, who finished first in points per game this season (33.8) and yards per play (6.7). This is Shanahan's ninth season as an offensive coordinator. He's held the job in Houston, Washington and Cleveland.
Shanahan has shepherded many high-powered offenses in the past, which could be appealing to a Broncos team that finished 26th in yards per play (5.1) and 27th in yards per game (323.1) this season.
The Shanahan family already has a history with the Broncos' organization. Kyle's father, Mike, was the Broncos head coach for 14 seasons. He went 138-86 in that time and won two Super Bowls. Now it looks like the organization is at least exploring the possibility of bringing his son aboard.
