BOULDER, Colo. (AP) — More than 1,000 homes have been evacuated due to a fire in the Sunshine Canyon area west of Boulder and residents of another 3,000 homes are on pre-evacuation notice.
The Boulder County sheriff's office says the fire was reported at about 1:40 a.m. Sunday and had burned between 30 and 50 acres by daybreak. There are no reports of homes being damaged or lost.
Boulder Office of Emergency Management spokeswoman Gabi Boerkircher says firefighters are facing a hot, dry day with potential winds up to 20 mph.
Evacuated residents can go to the Boulder High School parking lot while a temporary shelter is set up at the East Boulder Community Center. Large animals can be taken to the county fairgrounds.
Residents are asked to avoid the Wonderland Lake area because firefighters are drawing water from the lake.
