Hi. My prerogative with this daily news roundup is to find stories that give me a new perspective on Denver, help me understand a complicated issue, genuinely amuse me or otherwise prove useful. Today, we're talking about eviction from motels, unwarranted searches, apartment hunting, upcoming events and more.
Eviction:
People who live in motels have little protection from eviction. So, when the King's Inn on Colfax sold to a new owner and doubled its rent, dozens of people were left all but homeless in the course of two days. “For bed bugs, roaches, sewage coming up from my tub, you are raising the rent? ... I have a stove that electrocutes me. This was the cheapest place around, so we sucked it up.” Jennifer Brown reports. (DP)
Unwarranted searches:
Can your landlord bring police to inspect your apartment without a warrant? After Denver7 looked into it in Longmont, local officials acknowledged that they were using public housing as a training ground for drug dogs -- with very real potential consequences when they found drugs. The police say they'll stop the practice. And, no, you don't have to allow an unwarranted police search of your home. (ABC7, 9News)
Mixed-use gets stomped:
A plan to allow dense housing, retail and restaurants near the Orchard Station light rail, south DTC, went before Greenwood Village voters yesterday. They hated it -- not suburban enough, generally -- and now it's not happening. Molly Armbrister reports. (DBJ)
Money for transportation:

Two people have died or are presumed dead on Colorado rivers this week -- one on the Upper Colorado, one in Delta County, Keagan Harsha reports. High temperatures are causing rapid snowmelt and runoff. (KDVR)

Fire officials are predicting a below-average wildfire season for Colorado. Still, don't be an idiot. (KUNC)
Aurora mayor cold on climate accord:
Mayor Steve Hogan of Aurora isn't very eager to join with other mayors (including Denver's and Lakewood's) who have committed to the ideas of the Paris Accord. (Sentinel)
