First thing's first: Here's your weather forecast for today. It's not terribly exciting, but it is useful and I unearthed an old, absolutely stunning Kevin J. Beaty photo for it.
Everything else here is equally useful but far less pretty. You'll have to check a mirror for pretty. [wink]
Denver Day Works is, you know, working
And so are 70 people who needed jobs. The city's effort to employ people experiencing homelessness has been chipping away at that goal since November. Crews are currently doing things like replacing roughly 30,000 lighting fixtures in the Denver Central Library. (Denverite)
City Council is going to have a big day on Monday
There will be an hour-long public hearing about the city's plan to offer a kind of amnesty to DIY art spaces that need to get up to code.
And it will consider a moratorium extension for "slot homes." As Erica explains: "These homes are often built under a provision in the zoning code called the 'garden court form,' which is supposed to be for those U-shaped apartment buildings with a grassy courtyard in the middle. Instead, we’re getting a lot of these man-made box canyons, especially in West Colfax, Jefferson Park and Highland." (Denverite)
Police are now patrolling Denver Public Library
It's another move by the library to reduce the drug use and other illegal activity in an around the building.
“Just observing how the building feels, there’s been a remarkable change,” said Michelle Jeske, the city librarian. “I don’t see the same activities I did a month ago.” (DP)
What the closure of Clayton Early Learning has shown
Ann Schimke and Marissa Page go long on how the shuttering of the well-respected school exposes financial issues in the child care business. (Chalkbeat)
Nolan Arenado had a good night
The third baseman came back from a rare day off with a homer and drove in five runs as the Rockies beat the White Sox 12-4. (AP)
It's quiet, but not too quiet
There's not a lot going on this weekend, so you'll notice our list of things to do is a little lighter than usual this week. But light is a relative term here -- like hippo compared to a whale. (Denverite)
Did you know there's a "hot air balloon rodeo" in Steamboat Springs this weekend?
I did not. Now we both know. (7)
How much can you tweak Shakespeare?
Naturally, we're discussing this because a Colorado Shakespeare Festival production of "Hamlet" has a woman in the lead role. (CPR)
