Property owners on Brighton Boulevard are getting closer to a decision on whether to rename the road in the River North district.
On Oct. 3, the general improvement district, which represents businesses and property owners in the area, will hold a public forum to hear opinions about the proposal. While various new names have been floated throughout this year, including Broadway North and North Broadway, the one under consideration now is "Broadway Boulevard."
The event will be from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 3, at Visual Interest, the lighting store at 3444 Brighton Blvd.
The meeting will include a presentation and statements from two developers, one in opposition and one in support of the change. Mickey Zeppelin has criticized the change as one that undercuts the area's industrial history, while Bernard Hurley says it's a way to call attention to a stretch of Denver that has been thoroughly rebuilt.
Conversations about the rename have "come up time again" as far back as 2011, according to Leesly León, a spokeswoman for the city's North Denver Cornerstone Collaborative. They heated up this year, with the city government providing guidance and information to those who were interested in the change.
"Our role continues to be that of providing information on how the renaming process takes place," León wrote. "The city will support the community decision on this topic."
Ultimately, the decision will be made by handful of people. If the proposal moves forward, those who own land along Brighton in the affected area would vote on whether or not to rename the road.
The road would be renamed from its intersection with 29th Street, where it meets North Broadway, all the way up to its intersection with York Street near the Adams County border.
At York Street, just after the jog in the road near Riverside Cemetery, the road would once again become Brighton Boulevard. Denver doesn't have the power to rename the road beyond that point.
