The Regional Transportation District has some good news and some bad news about year-end bus and rail service.

First the bad news: RTD expects fireworks shows downtown to disrupt light rail and MallRide services on New Year's Eve and the early hours of Jan. 1.

The good news? The bus and rail operator is partnering with Coors Light and Coors Distributing Co. again to offer free rides on all regularly scheduled bus and rail service to discourage drinking and driving.

Free service will run from 7 p.m. New Year's Eve to 7 a.m. Jan. 1., although fireworks displays will temporarily disrupt some light rail and bus services in downtown Denver.

RTD said Wednesday there will be limited Free MallRide service on the 16th Street mall from 8 p.m. New Year's Eve to 1 a.m. Jan. 1. There will also be no service on the D and H rail lines between Theatre District/Convention Center and 18th and California/Stout stations because of fireworks downtown.

Two fireworks shows are set to occur at 9 p.m. and midnight. For the best viewpoints, Visit Denver recommends people stand along the 16th Street Mall.

RTD will provide one extra hour of rail service to accommodate late-night and early morning travelers, and an additional trip will be added to the B Line’s schedule at 12:30 a.m. Jan. 1.
