A man crashed his car into The Hornet restaurant on Broadway and First Avenue on Wednesday afternoon, hitting one pedestrian and doing extensive damage to a doorway and window.
Denver Police Department spokesman Doug Schepman said the person who was hit was not seriously injured.
The driver, 51-year-old William Maheu, was driving south on Broadway and making a left turn onto First Avenue when he hit the curb, then the pedestrian and the building. Schepman said he's been cited for reckless driving, careless driving and no proof of insurance.
He also said there were no notes to indicate that the driver was intoxicated.
Sean Workman, owner of The Hornet, said they're working on a temporary exterior wall now so they can stay open for a "Singles Awareness Party" event tonight. They'll spray-paint it to say “yes we’re open, no this is not a drive thru,” he added.
Update: They did.
This is the third or fourth time a car collided with The Hornet, according to Workman. Sometime around 2002, he said, a car crashed into the restaurant and took out the whole corner.
Laura Banning, The Hornet's manager, said she was just telling a colleague the other day that she was afraid something like this might happen.
