Although a lot of people have a lot of feelings about Police Chief Robert White, it's hard to disagree on one thing about his looming retirement: Denver's going to need a new police chief.

Hancock said in a press release that he wants community input to be a factor in how the final round of candidates is selected in the search for Denver's next police chief. He announced times and locations for four meetings to gather that input:

  • Tuesday, May 22, 6-7:30 p.m.
Regis Groff Campus, 18250 E. 51st Ave., Denver
  • Tuesday, May 29, 6-7:30 p.m.
PPA Event Center, 2105 Decatur St., Denver
  • Tuesday, June 5, 6-7:30 p.m.
Westwood Community Center (SWIC), 1000 S. Lowell Blvd., Denver
  • Saturday, June 9, 9:30-11 a.m.
Windsor Gardens (Center Point), 597 S. Clinton St., Denver

If you can't make it to any of these meetings, the city has also opened an email account, [email protected], so you can write in and voice your thoughts to the search committee up until June 10th.

“Community input is a vital component of the selection of Denver’s next Police Chief, and these community meetings will provide that opportunity for residents to voice what qualities and attributes we should consider in making that selection,” Mayor Hancock said in the release.

Here's how the search will work:

The application is open to “Current and retired members of the Denver Police Department who have held a rank of Lieutenant or higher for at least five years.” The Police Executive Research Forum (PERF), will gather up candidates that meet the requirements to become our police chief.  After PERF has done that work, the Police Chief Search Committee will select finalists based on community expectations gathered via these input forums and then pass those names on to the mayor. Finally, Mayor Hancock will review those candidates and appoint our next police chief from that final batch.

The members of the Police Chief Search Committee are:

  • Troy Riggs, Search Committee Chair and Executive Director of Public Safety
  • Councilwoman Kendra Black, Denver City Council, District 4
