Gubernatorial candidate Walker Stapleton landed a big endorsement Wednesday after President Trump used his first tweet of the day to announce support for the Republican candidate.

“Walker Stapleton is running as the highly respected Republican Candidate for Governor of the Great State of Colorado,” Trump said in his tweet Wednesday morning. “His credentials and talents are impeccable. He has my complete and total Endorsement!”

Stapleton campaign spokesman Jerrod Dobkin issued a statement Wednesday in response to Trump's endorsement. He mentioned U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders' planned visit this month to stump for Democratic candidate Jared Polis.

"President Trump supports Walker because he knows Walker will fight for hardworking Coloradans every day," Dobkin said. "Meanwhile, Bernie Sanders, a self-proclaimed Democratic Socialist, is campaigning for Jared Polis because they both support expanding government and raising taxes. Bernie Sanders and Jared Polis are the poster boys of the radical left who's (sic) policies would hurt Colorado families."

The endorsement comes less than a week before ballots in Colorado are set to drop ahead of the November election. Stapleton is currently in the middle of a busy debate schedule with Polis.

Stapleton’s campaign said this summer that they had reached out to Trump about stumping for him in Colorado.

In September, his campaign said there were no updates on the plan.

Wednesday’s endorsement will likely be celebrated by Democrats in Colorado. Party member have tried to paint Stapleton’s support of Trump as out of touch with voters. Trump’s approval ratings in Colorado aren’t great, leading at least one pollster to suggest that the president’s support won’t do much for republicans.

In a tweet, Polis called Stapleton a "yes man" for Trump's policies. Colorado Democratic Party Chair Morgan Carroll offered a similar comment in a statement on Wednesday.

"If you like what's happening in Washington and you want to see the Trump agenda enacted here in Colorado, then vote for Trump's yes-man Walker Stapleton," Carroll said in the statement. "If you think Colorado deserves better, vote for Jared Polis and the Democratic ticket."
