Denver just had one of its rainiest days ever, but a drier weekend awaits us

Denver saw the rainiest May 11 of all May 11’s in recorded history.

Since meteorologists started record-keeping in 1872, Denver has only had seven days ever that were rainier than May 11, 2023.

Thursday also broke the record for rainiest May 11 in Denver’s history (measured at the Denver International Airport). The previous May 11 record was 1.55 inches, set in 2011. On Thursday, the airport measured 2.92 inches.

“That type of rainfall doesn’t occur very often,” said National Weather Service meteorologist Bob Kleyla.

But drier days are likely ahead.

Saturday should be dry, while Sunday has a chance of showers. While the Denver area saw some hail, plus flood and tornado warnings the past few days, Kleyla does not expect similar threats through the weekend.

“We’ll have a quieter weather pattern through the weekend, even possibly in the early next week.”
