Mayor-Elect Mike Johnston has named political heavyweight Jenn Ridder as his chief of staff.

While he initially opened the job to multiple applicants, the listing cautioned he already had a likely pick.

"I'm thrilled to bring Jenn Ridder on board as we get to work to transform Denver into America's best city," said Johnston, in a statement. "Jenn is a Denver native who has dedicated her career to public service and is committed to building a more equitable and vibrant Denver from Day One. As we confront both big challenges and big opportunities, there's no one better to help us steer the ship than Jenn."

This is his first major appointment in his administration, which will take over the city on Monday, July 17.

Chief of staff is one of the most significant roles in the mayor's office. In the position, she will manage the office's operations and coordinate with city agencies under the mayor's leadership.

"Having grown up in Denver, I'm excited to serve the city we all love," said Ridder, an East High School alum, in a statement. "Mike's put forward a vision of a safe, affordable, and more vibrant Denver. I can't wait to work shoulder-to-shoulder with community members as we deliver that promise for the entire city."

Ridder has deep experience with leading political campaigns which she will bring to the executive work of the mayor's office.

She's also been National States Leader on Joe Biden's presidential campaign, overseeing thousands of staff members, according Vibrant Elect, Johnston's transition committee.

Most recently, she's worked as a vice president for the political consultant company Precision Strategies.

She served as campaign manager for Governor Jared Polis' first run for the office -- in which he notably defeated Johnston to lead the state.

In a statement, Polis said he's regularly counted on her advice in his leadership roles.

"Her leadership style is to bring people together to tackle tough challenges head-on and deliver real results, and that's exactly what Denver needs," Polis added.
