A boiler caught fire on the roof of the Sheraton Hotel downtown Thursday morning, spewing a stream of smoke that was visible outside of the city's core.

The fire began shortly after 11 a.m., according to a statement from the Denver Fire Department posted on X, the website formerly known as Twitter.

Fire crews responded to the scene and monitored the smoke plume. The hotel was not evacuated, and firefighters do not believe anyone inside the building is at risk, said Captain John Chism with the DFD.

"We expect to see smoke until around noonish as the boiler continues to burn old diesel and oil," he said.

DFD will continue to monitor the fire through the afternoon
