With the end of free fare summer comes the lead up to fall. As a new school year ramps up, Regional Transportation District (RTD) service changes are now in effect. Here's what riders need to know.

While most people will return to paying for RTD service, trips will remain free for youth under the age of 19 through August of 2024, as part of a new pilot program for young people. The new fare structure will also make paying for transit simpler and cheaper, and lower costs for low-income riders, but those changes won't go into effect until next year.

Here's which routes look different as of Sunday:

  • Route 16 has split into two routes, 16 and 17. Route 16 runs between Colfax Ave. and Broadway and Oak stations, while Route 17 goes to Federal Center Station and 10th Street/Washington Ave.
  • Route 65 is expanding hours, running from 5 a.m. to midnight on weekdays and 5 a.m. to 11 p.m. on weekends.
  • Route 121 south of Peoria Station will get 15-minute service on Saturdays. Alternating trips will continue to 40th Ave. & Airport Blvd./Gateway Park.
  • Trips to Wagon Road Park-n-Ride on Route 120E/120W are getting rerouted.
  • RTD is reinstating four northbound and southbound trips between Federal Center and Downtown Boulder stations on Route GS.
  • Seasonal school trip service is returning on Routes 11, 20, 24, 30, 52, 65, 73 and 225.
