Rockies manager Walt Weiss and team brass still have yet to engage in any talks about a new contract with three games remaining in their season.
Prior to the Rockies' 7-2 loss to the San Francisco Giants on Friday, the Denver Post's Patrick Saunders asked Rockies general manager Jeff Bridich about Weiss' future with the team.
Here's what Bridich said:
“We will go through the same process as we did last year. That is, sitting down after the season is done and having conversations and talking about how the season went and talking about the future.”
That is consistent with what Weiss said in late August. It is also, perhaps, a bad sign for Weiss' future with the club.
Weiss took over in 2012 on the heels of Jim Tracy's abrupt resignation and the worst season in franchise history. Colorado went 74-88 in 2013, and then won 66 and 68 games in 2014 and 2015, respectively.
The Rockies seemed to make progress this season in terms of wins and losses (74-85 with a series left) and the development of young talent. There is reason to be optimistic about the Rockies' postseason chances next season with young players like Trevor Story, Tyler Anderson, Jon Gray and David Dahl playing alongside Nolan Arenado, D.J. LeMahieu, Charlie Blackmon and Carlos Gonzalez.
It remains to be seen if Weiss will get to attempt to lead that group into the playoffs, though. Bridich, who got the GM job in 2014, wasn't in power when Weiss received his three-year deal. It's possible Bridich wants a manager of his own choosing.
