Colorado foundations gave out 25,611 grants to educational groups, health organizations and other causes in 2014, according to a new report from Philanthropy Southwest.
The more than 1,050 Colorado foundations gave upward of $816.4 million. That's about 13 percent of the $6.3 billion foundations gave in the seven-state region studied by the grantmakers association Philanthropy Southwest.
Texas foundations gave the most — $3.1 billion — out of the Lone Star State, Arkansas, Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, Nevada and Oklahoma.
The report released Thursday uses the most recent tax return data from nonprofits, charitable trusts and other foundations. The data show most (46 percent) of the money from foundations in Colorado went to education and human services causes and the majority (72 percent) stayed in the state.
