Six bottles found near the Colorado Convention Center are in the possession of the Denver Fire Department this afternoon. Local TV stations are describing the confiscated items as possibly "Molotov cocktails," or homemade flammable weapons.

Denver police responded to reports of suspicious items near 14th and Welton Street at about 10 a.m., according to police spokeswoman Raquel Lopez. The bomb squad and fire investigators were called in.

"Everything was cleared -- it's already gone," Lopez said around 1 p.m. "There were no injuries, no evacuations, no street closures."

Fire investigators took the bottles for further inspection. Denver fire spokesman Mike Somma said he did not yet know what was inside the bottles.

ABC7 reported that the bottles were "what appeared to be Molotov cocktails ... four bottles prepared to become fiery weapons." Neither DPD nor DFD spokespersons would confirm that claim as of 2 p.m.

ABC7 published a photo showing several bottles, including a Steel Reserve malt-liquor 40-ounce bottle, containing a clear liquid. 9NEWS claims its photographer saw that the bottles' mouths were stuffed with rags.

"Molotov cocktails" is a colloquial term for bottles filled with flammable liquids. Rags stuffed in the bottles are lit and used as wicks. They are meant to burst into flames after the wick is lit and the bottle is thrown.
