John Elway shoots down QB trade rumor with Trumpian tweet
Sandy Clough, a radio host with 104.3 The Fan, reported that the Denver Broncos were “aggressively pursuing” a trade for Cincinnati Bengals quarterback A.J. McCarron.
Wednesday morning, Sandy Clough, a radio host with 104.3 The Fan, reported that the Denver Broncos were “aggressively pursuing” a trade for Cincinnati Bengals quarterback A.J. McCarron.
Clough added that there was “growing dissatisfaction” with the quarterbacks already on the Broncos’ roster, Trevor Siemian and Paxton Lynch.
Well, not even a half hour after Clough’s report, Broncos general manager John Elway shot it down with a tweet reminiscent of the kind President Donald Trump fires off to criticize mainstream media:
Elway, who has an extensive history of donating to Republican causes, gave $2,700 to Trump’s campaign in September, according to opensecrets.org. Elway also attended Trump’s inauguration in January.
Then in March, Elway wrote a letter to the Senate Judiciary Committee asking them to confirm Trump’s Supreme Court Nominee Neil Gorsuch. The piece of paper Elway wrote the letter on featured the Broncos logo at the top of it.
The Broncos’ preseason begins Thursday. They play the Chicago Bears. Siemian is slated to start the game, though Broncos coach Vance Joseph has insisted that the competition between Siemian and Lynch is even.
McCarron, a fifth-round pick in 2014, has served as Andy Dalton’s backup in Cincinnati the last two seasons. He saw some action in 2015 — throwing for 854 yards, six touchdowns and two interceptions — but didn’t throw a pass in 2016.
The Broncos missed the playoffs last year for the first time since 2010.
