Denver Nuggets small forward Juancho Hernangomez has been diagnosed with mononucleosis, the team announced Tuesday.

Hernangomez got off to a slow start to his sophomore season, failing to score a point, grab a rebound or dish out an assist in his first two games of the year. The diagnosis helps explain why.

Denver held Hernangomez out of Monday’s game against the Wizards. He did not travel with the Nuggets as they left for a four-game road trip that begins Wednesday in Charlotte.

The Nuggets gave no timetable for when Hernangomez might return.

Hernangomez’s absence means the Nuggets will have to figure out how to divvy up the backup small forward minutes. Malik Beasley played seven minutes against Washington on Monday. Denver could go with him or 37-year-old Richard Jefferson, who signed with the Nuggets last week.
