As CDOT's massive revamp of Interstate 70 continues to pick up steam, the agency will close the highway completely between Colorado Boulevard and Interstate 270 from 10 p.m. Friday, April 12, to 5 a.m. Monday morning.

In a press release, CDOT said they'll be setting bridge beams to "fly" Interstate 270 over I-70.

While that stretch of highway is closed, eastbound drivers heading past that point will be rerouted north on I-25 to I-76 to I-270. Westbound travelers can do this in reverse.

A spokesperson for the agency said they're only allowed four complete weekend closures -- this is the first -- so they're incentivized to get as much disruptive work done as they can this weekend. CDOT is currently figuring out if they can also squeeze in work on utilities along the stretch.

This work is on the project's "east area," which should be done by the end of the year.

The viaduct between I-25 and Steele Street is not set to be removed until 2020. CDOT will begin Phase 2, which will eventually lower westbound traffic below the neighborhood grade, this summer.
