Car thefts are down at Denver International Airport, long a hotspot for property crime in the city.

According to data from the airport, November 2023 saw 11 car thefts, compared to 39 thefts in November of 2022. The airport saw 10 car thefts in December of 2023, a busy travel month.

"Overall, vehicle theft at DIA is trending down significantly from the peak during the summer months," airport officials wrote in a statement Thursday.

Airport officials credit efforts to curb thefts that were announced last summer for the drop in crime.

DIA added High Activity Location Observation (HALO) cameras, hired additional security and police officers to patrol parking lots and started scanning property for previously stolen cars. The airport is also building new barriers at lots to prevent thieves from exiting.

"One auto theft at DEN is one too many. But through a focused and coordinated effort with our partners throughout 2023 to improve and increase security measures, surveillance, and enforcement, we have finally begun to see thefts at DEN trending down," DIA CEO Phil Washington said in a statement. "We will stay vigilant and continue our joint efforts to ensure vehicles are safe while parked at DEN."
