Elitch Gardens won’t move from Downtown Denver this year, so it’s hiring 1,500 workers

The planned River Mile development will take over the land where Elitch Gardens sits. The looming question: When?

With a massive Downtown Denver development planned for the land where Elitch Gardens sits, Denverites have been wondering just how long the city center will boast the amusement and water park that dates back to the late 1800s and has been at its current location since 1995.

The development, called the River Mile, will transform the flow of the South Platte River and could bring upwards of 15,000 people to Downtown Denver.

Jeff Shoemaker, a booster of the River Mile and the former head of the Greenway Foundation, told Denverite in 2021 that he predicted Adams and Arapahoe counties would be vying for the future park. Aurora Mayor Mike Coffman told 9News he was in talks with River Mile developer Kroenke Sports and Entertainment, though no plans have been submitted.

Meanwhile, management at Elitch Gardens knows little about long-term plan.

"The park will be in its current location for the foreseeable future," explained spokesperson Cindy Hann. "Park management has no details regarding potential new locations."

So hiring continues -- even as the 2024 season could be one of the last few on the current site.

If you're 16 or up, you can join the long Denver tradition of working at Elitch Gardens.

"Joining the Elitch Gardens team can be quite a fulfilling experience," David Dorman, general manager of Elitch Gardens, said in a statement. "From acquiring a diverse skillset to forging lasting friendships and creating memorable experiences for our guests, there's no shortage of rewards, all while earning a competitive hourly wage."

The park will host hiring fairs on Saturday, March 2, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday, March 3, from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m., at the Front Entry Pavilion at 2000 Elitch Circles. Candidates will be able to interview and get job offers on site.

The park opens to season-pass holders on April 20 and to the general public on April 27.

Hours are flexible, pay starts at $18.29 an hour, and employees receive free park admission and free tickets for friends and family, along with special nights where staff can ride without the crowds.
