Update: The man was arrested just after 6 p.m. yesterday, according to a Denver Police Department release.
The suspect, 32-year-old Clarence Seeley, dropped the pipe when officers approached and was arrested without incident, the statement says. He is currently being held for investigation of aggravated assault.
A 35-year-old man had a head laceration from the assault, but refused medical treatment from paramedics.
Update: Public records show that Seeley has been charged many times in connection with alcohol use and disruptive behavior.
He was charged in Indiana in 2012 with public intoxication, a misdemeanor, following "combative behavior." That incident, at a gas station, also did not result in serious injuries, according to an unsuccessful lawsuit he filed contesting the conviction.
In the past year, he has pleaded guilty in Indiana to misdemeanors including resisting law enforcement, disorderly conduct and multiple counts of public intoxication.
This is sure to add fuel to the demands for a more tightly patrolled 16th Street Mall: A video shows a man running and swinging two long white poles, likely PVC, at several other people on the mall near Cleveland Place on Wednesday night.
Note that the poster of the video, Caleb Bonham, describes the shirtless attacker as a "homeless man," but we have not seen any proof for that description. The video was viewed more than a million times within 12 hours of publication.
KDVR reports that the attack happened just after 6 pm. Wednesday, and that the man has been charged with aggravated assault. Officers reportedly were on scene within three minutes, and that no one accepted medical treatment.
