Michael Hancock has held several high-profile positions in the city of Denver. City Council President for eight years, mayor for the last five. But before all that, Hancock worked another job with quite a bit of visibility: Huddles, the Broncos’ mascot.
Yes, Hancock was the Denver Broncos' mascot many years ago. He spent the 1986 season as Huddles, now called Miles, when he was still in high school.
The team made the Super Bowl that year, so he got a free trip to Pasadena, California, to watch Denver take on the New York Giants. The Broncos lost 39-20.
“I didn’t get a mascot ring,” Hancock lamented Wednesday at the Broncos’ kickoff party held at the Civic Park Center.
Hancock attended the event with several NFL executives and former Broncos receiver Ed McCaffrey to celebrate the return of football season — and obviously Denver’s Super Bowl 50 victory. While celebrating, Hancock took a moment to reflect on his days as Huddles.
"It certainly teaches you entertainment,” he said of that 1986 season. “But I love the Denver Broncos. I was a fan before I became mascot, and I continue to be a big fan.
“I’m always proud to celebrate Denver Broncos victories and certainly Super Bowl champion Broncos. I (just) wish when I was mascot they would have won the Super Bowl.”
