It’s not that they prefer swimming to playing basketball. Some Aurora residents think that the work suggests the community center near Hampden Avenue and Chambers Road is turning into a mosque, CBS Denver reports. And, apparently, that mosques are inherently bad.
As one woman (who did not give her name) put it: “I don’t know those people. And it does raise fears when people are dishonest about their motives.”
The city of Aurora has issued a statement saying the construction is in fact to build a basketball court, and CBS reports that the community center has already held an open house attended by residents.
The city is planning a meeting to discuss neighbors’ concerns.
We’ve contacted the Colorado Muslim Community Center and will update this post when we hear from them.
