An hours-long standoff that shut down traffic in Cherry Creek and led to a lockdown at Bromwell Elementary ended peacefully Wednesday evening with the arrest of a suspect in a carjacking.
Denver police spokesman Sonny Jackson said police received a report of an attempted carjacking around 2:45 p.m. The suspect holed up in a vehicle, which led police to shut down traffic on 2nd and 3rd avenues and Columbine and Josephine streets as they tried to talk the suspect into surrendering.
Jackson said the victim got away.
The hours-long street closures snarled traffic in the area, and police asked for the public's patience so they could resolve the situation peacefully.
Students were released from Bromwell, but walkers needed to be picked up by a guardian, according to Denver Public Schools.
