A Denver police officer was shot in the leg while attempting to calm a man in crisis in South Harvey Park early Saturday morning.
Officers responded to a home in the 2800 block of South Quitman Street around 4:30 a.m., where the suspect was telling people he was suicidal, according to the DPD. They tried non-lethal methods of calming the man down, but they were ineffective. The man shot an officer, and officers fired back.
The injured officer was taken to Denver Health Medical Center and needed surgery this morning.
The suspect was taken to Swedish Medical Center. He underwent surgery and is in critical but stable condition.
Update, 3:30 p.m.: The officer is also out of surgery and is in serious but stable condition.
No one else was injured in the shooting. An investigation is ongoing.
