A chase ended with police from outside Denver fatally shooting one woman and critically injuring another, according to Denver police. Officers from Littleton and Englewood had pursued people suspected of carjacking a vehicle in Littleton through Englewood and into Denver.

Police have not said whether the women were armed.

The police officers were responding to reports that two men and two women had stolen a car just before midnight on Thursday in Littleton, according to Cmdr. Barb Archer. The carjacking victim said that someone had fired a gun during the theft.

Littleton police picked up the pursuit near Arapahoe Community College, then chased the vehicle north. At some point, the two men involved in the theft apparently had fled the car.

Officers tried multiple times to physically stop the suspect vehicle with their own vehicle. Englewood police joined the pursuit at one point.

Police forced the vehicle to stop at West Louisiana Avenue and South Bannock Street, just northeast of Overland Golf Course, according to Archer. That’s just more than 6 miles from where it started.

“The car comes to a stop. The officers fired their weapons,” Barber said. She did not answer questions about whether the women in the vehicle were armed or had threatened the officers in any way. Denver police were not on the scene at the time of the shooting, she said.

9News earlier reported that someone had fired at officers. Its article on the shooting longer makes that claim, but a tweet saying so remains. Denver police will lead the investigation of the shooting.
