The ski train to Winter Park is returning this winter with largely the same prices and schedule as last year, but you can find some discounts if you act now.
The train is basically the Polar Express for skiers and snowboarders. It's warm and cozy, it travels through magical terrain, and it also lets you skip Interstate 70.
This is the second year of its revival, and it'll be running from Jan. 5 to March 25. Each train fits about 500 people, leaving at 7 a.m. from Denver Union Station for the two-hour journey, with the return journey from Winter Park beginning at 4:30 p.m.
Like last year, tickets generally will cost between $78 and $118 round-trip, although you can also buy one-way tickets for half that. Tickets will get more expensive as reservations for each trip book out.
However, this year will also include a special discount tier. On certain dates -- you'll have to hunt for them by pecking in different dates on the website -- you can get round-trip tickets for $58.
That addresses one of my primary complaints about the train: Trains are cool, but skiing is already expensive. (Read my full review here.)
The service also includes several new Friday trips on the first Fridays of the months of service. Otherwise, it's weekends only.
