The opening of Denver's next recreation center has been delayed by a month for finishing touches. It should happen in January, according to parks manager Happy Haynes.

"We have some technical issues, mechanical issues with the elevator. We want to be sure everything is working perfectly," she said at a meeting on Tuesday.

The exact opening date hasn't been announced yet. It's a relatively small delay, considering the project has been in the works for nearly a decade.

The completed center will stand at Colfax and Josephine. It will include:

  • A lap swimming pool and a leisure pool
  • A gymnasium with a full-size basketball court and cardio-weight room
  • Group exercise rooms and a multi-purpose room
  • A childcare area
  • An outdoor climbing wall and bouldering area
  • Table tennis
  • A quarter-acre dog park
  • Community gathering spaces
  • A rooftop deck
  • A slack-line course, but you'll have to bring your own equipment

Carla Madison, whom the center is named after, served as the City Council representative of District 8 from 2007 until her death in 2011. She was 54.
