Denver residents will likely see smoke coming from the 16,000 acre Rocky Mountain Arsenal Wildlife Refuge, as fighters conduct several prescribed burns over the next few weeks.
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service plans to burn up to 2,300 acres over four weeks. Weather permitting, the burns will be conducted between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m., with smoke visible from several miles away.
The first burn will start Monday at 10 a.m. Firefighters intend to burn 500 acres in the southwest portion of the refuge. Winds are expected to blow smoke northeast.
Park visitors are encouraged to check Rocky Mountain Arsenal’s website for potential closures. Nearby residents and bystanders are being asked not to alert the authorities if they see fire at the refuge.
