Facebook gave a big boost to voter registration in Colorado with a simple reminder notice last week.
Last Thursday saw a little less than 3,000 new voter registrations. After the Facebook reminder notice went out -- starting late Thursday and continuing in batches through early Friday -- there were more than 13,889 new voter registrations and voters who updated their information, the Secretary of State's Office said.
"Are you registered to vote? Register now to make sure you have a voice in the election," the reminder from Facebook read.
Registration is the first step to actually voting. That's a ridiculously self-evident statement, but when people bemoan low voter turnout, a lot of that is people who are eligible to vote but not registered. In 2012, just 53 percent of the eligible voting population cast a ballot, but 84 percent of registered voters did.
In Colorado, you can register right up to Election Day, but if you want to get a ballot in the mail, your voter registration needs to have your correct address.

Tuesday is National Voter Registration Day. If you're in the downtown area and not registered yet, you can also swing by Civic Center Park, where Denver Elections will be registering voters from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
