Shooting near 16th Street Mall kills one person, injures another

Denver police are investigating a shooting in the 1600 block of Champa St. this afternoon.

Denver police are investigating a shooting in the 1600 block of Champa St. this afternoon.

That's the block immediately northeast of the 16th Street Mall, near Back East Bar and Grill, Floyd's 99 Barbershop and other businesses.

Two victims have been taken to a hospital and police have set up a perimeter in the area.

Update 3 p.m. Denver police are now reporting that one of the victims was pronounced dead at the hospital.

They are still searching for suspects and Champa Street has been closed from 15th Street to 19th Street.

Update 3:20 p.m. According to Denver police spokesman Doug Schepman, a fight involving multiple people broke out at 2:12 p.m. in a parking lot on the 1600 block of Champa Street and ended with two people getting shot.

The suspects might have boarded a bus. Two people have been detained but not arrested.

"The increased presence of officers in the 'walk the beat' program ... were able to get to the area extremely quickly ... and detain them extremely quickly," Schepman said.

According to CBS's Karen Morfitt, the Mall is not closed.
